Origin Baking Co. Branding Identity

CLIENT
Origin Baking Co.

SCOPE
Brand research • logo system • packaging consultation • website design

Origin Baking Co. was founded with the goal of bringing small-batch, French-inspired baked goods made with simple, high-quality ingredients to Orange County. The founder drew inspiration from his entrepreneurial immigrant grandparents and his own upbringing, which included exposure to both Asian and Latin flavors that influence the bakery’s menu.

At the time of the project, the business was operating through pop-ups at coffee shops and farmers markets while preparing to open its first storefront. The brand needed to appeal to a well-traveled, food-curious millennial audience while also supporting future growth through wholesale and catering partnerships.

Challenge

The identity needed to communicate craftsmanship and quality while standing out in a crowded local food scene. It also needed to balance multiple influences: classic European bakery heritage, modern presentation, and subtle cultural influences reflected in the bakery’s flavors.

From a practical perspective, the brand also had to work across a variety of early business touchpoints, including pop-up signage, packaging, digital presence, and an eventual storefront.

My Role

I worked directly with the founder to define the brand direction and design the visual identity. The process began with brand research and a discovery questionnaire to better understand the bakery’s goals, audience, and aesthetic preferences.

Based on those insights, I developed and presented several design directions before refining the final identity.

Brand Exploration

Conducted brand research and visual exploration to identify a direction that reflected the bakery’s personality and artisanal products.

Brand Attributes
  • Handcrafted

  • Heritage-inspired

  • Modern European bakery

  • Welcoming & neighborhood-focused

Identity System

Designed the final logo along with supporting logo marks to allow flexible use across different surfaces.

Real World Application

Applied the identity across early business touchpoints including:

  • Squarespace website design

  • business cards

  • farmers market banners and signage

I also consulted on packaging decisions, recommending a simple stamped logo approach that allowed the brand to be applied consistently while keeping production cost-effective.

Outcome

The final identity provided Origin Baking Co. with a cohesive visual foundation across both digital and physical environments. The flexible logo system and simple packaging approach allowed the brand to be applied consistently across pop-ups, farmers markets, and early marketing materials as the business launched. As the bakery continued to grow toward opening its storefront, the identity established a recognizable presence that could scale with the brand.

Key Takeaways

Designing for small businesses often requires balancing strong visual identity with practical production constraints. Creating flexible logo marks and simple packaging solutions helped ensure the brand could be used consistently as the business grew.
